About the role   

The Director Accounting Standards is responsible for leading the accounting standards function in developing accounting standards that align with and deliver on the XRB’s broader strategic objectives. 

This includes working closely with the New Zealand Accounting Standards Board (NZASB) in developing and approving accounting standards, as well as providing thought leadership on financial reporting issues. Your key responsibilities will include leading a team of technical experts in overseeing the technical development of accounting standards, preparing submissions to international standard-setting bodies, conducting research on financial accounting issues, and fostering collaboration with relevant national and international stakeholders.

As a member of the Senior Leadership Team, you will also contribute to the overall corporate management of the XRB, including supporting the Chief Executive and participating in strategic planning, budgeting, and developing an integrated external reporting framework.

About you

Your relationship management skills will be exceptional, and you are able to build trust and collaborate effectively with stakeholders across a wide range of sectors as well as the broader financial reporting system. You’ll have a have a forward-thinking and strategic mindset with the ability to see the bigger picture, anticipate future financial reporting developments and develop practical solutions. 

A knowledge of current accounting theory and practice in New Zealand is a must to lead and inspire a team of technical experts. Ideally, you’ll have a sound understanding of the public sector as well as experience working with the for-profit sector. Staff leadership is essential. Excellent organisational and project management skills, along with exceptional written, oral, and presentation communication abilities, will also enable you to succeed in this role.

About the role

Reporting to the Chief Executive, this newly created position will work primarily across two key projects; firstly, providing leadership and guidance to the Ngā pou o te kawa ora project, whereby the Kaiwhakahaere will work with XRB staff and governance on the development of the framework. This will be informed by liaising directly with Māori and non-Māori entities, to ensure that multiple voices are taken into consideration. 

Secondly, the coherence between the XRB’s current and future standards with te ao Māori. The standards issued by XRB have not been assessed for their alignment with te ao Maori and the Kaiwhakahaere will facilitate with a small working group to identify where there is room for enhancement within the standards.

This is a phenomenal opportunity to play a lead role in the development of an intergenerational impact reporting framework for Aotearoa New Zealand incorporating te ao Māori into its design.  

About you

Given the technical detail of the role, this would suit an experience Chartered Accountant who is looking to make more of an impact in their work. You’re likely familiar with the standards on a deep level and believe that you can make a meaningful contribution to how the standards are interpreted and what they measure.  

You will be committed to strengthening the Māori-Crown relationship through Te Tiriti o Waitangi. You will bring a deep understanding of Māori values, practice, and perspective to your work, as well as fluency in te Reo Māori me ōna tikanga.

You will also have:

• A deep understanding of te ao Māori.
• Excellent knowledge of, and substantial experience and expertise in a preparer, advisory and/or management role relating to accountancy or audit and assurance. 
• Excellent connections with Māori reporting entities and the ability to connect with previously uncontacted reporting entities based on mana in the wider community.
• Highly developed analytical and strategic skills and demonstrated initiative and creativity when solving problems.
• Excellent verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills, with the ability to communicate complex ideas to a variety of audiences.
• An ability to undertake some domestic (and, if required, international) travel.

The Technical Director Accounting Standards is a senior member of the accounting standards function in developing accounting standards that align with and deliver on the XRB’s broader strategic objectives. 

As the Technical Director, you will play a pivotal role in ensuring the high quality and completeness of the XRB's Accounting Standards. Your responsibilities will extend to providing strategic leadership and oversight to the Accounting Team's standard-setting activities. Collaboration with your manager, the Director Accounting Standards, will be essential to align these activities with the organisation's broader strategic objectives.

In your capacity as Technical Director, you will be entrusted with the crucial task of monitoring and managing the delivery of standard-setting projects carried out by the Accounting Standards Team. Additionally, you will be responsible for driving the reporting of trusted, relevant, and informative information through constituent engagements. This role also offers the unique opportunity to contribute thought leadership to the for-profit sector and/ or Public Sector, and actively pursue avenues to influence international accounting standards.

Your role will also involve leading high-priority projects, acting as the Project Manager. In this capacity, you will be expected to conduct various tasks, including research, technical analysis, constituency engagement, standard finalisation, and quality control processes. This multifaceted role will challenge you to ensure that projects are executed comprehensively and efficiently.

These responsibilities will be carried out with a clear focus on maintaining the integrity of accounting standards and advancing the financial reporting landscape. You will be a Chartered Accountant, CPA or equivalent with knowledge and experience of current accounting theory and practice in New Zealand

The narrative

This whakatauki speaks of how the Chair of the External Reporting Board (XRB)’s newly formed Sustainability Reporting Board (SRB) will require foresight and vision to guide the development of sustainability reporting for the good of Aotearoa New Zealand. The Chair of the SRB also plays an important role in the strategic direction of the XRB itself and its people, working closely with the Chief Executive (CE) and Director Sustainability Reporting to achieve the XRB’s overall strategy.

Primary focus

This is a unique opportunity for a person of substantial mana to establish and lead the newly formed SRB of the XRB. You will contribute to the development of the strategy and associated workplan of the Sustainability Reporting team of the XRB, and lead with influence both domestically and internationally, to help shape the future of sustainability reporting and its ability to achieve real sustainability outcomes for Aotearoa New Zealand.

The Chair’s workload is expected to be equivalent of up to approximately 50 days per annum. Remuneration is at a fixed daily rate established by the Remuneration Authority. Currently this rate is $1520 per day. Some travel nationally and internationally is expected; all reasonable related expenses will be reimbursed.

The role

The Chair of the SRB acts in an oversight capacity alongside highly competent staff. The Chair works closely with the Director of Sustainability Reporting to develop a strategy for sustainability reporting for Aotearoa New Zealand and ensures the SRB implements the XRB sustainability reporting workplan as it relates to climate and other sustainability reporting.

The Chair leads meetings of the SRB, manages the performance of SRB members and represents, in consultation with the CE, the SRB at relevant fora and occasions. The role does not entail hands-on work in developing standards or other material, which is a function of the XRB’s staff, nor is it a management role of XRB staff.
